The first form of commercial printing was invented 546 years ago by a man named Johannes Gutenberg. He developed a technique that is known as Letterpress. With letterpress, ink is transferred onto paper when the image area is raised above a plate. An impression is then pressed on. This method of printing was used for hundreds of years. The invention of alternative printing methods in the twentieth century makes printing a fast and simple process. It also makes printing a versatile process. To get a full understanding of the various techniques of commercial printing; what it is used for must first be discussed.
Commercial printing is a profession that involves the preparation of material that will be placed in books, booklets, magazines, newspapers, and other forms of publications. Printers that are used in the production of these publications have sophisticated features that are able to create seamless layouts. Features include the use of multiple cartridges, fast drying ink, and high resolution technology. There are printers that print images on business and identification cards, metal plates, and posters. People that often use these printers are employed in the business, government, graphic design, and publication sectors. Different types of printers use different printing techniques.
There are different types of commercial printers. Each type of printer uses a different method. The most widely used is called offset printing. This refers to an impression that is transferred from a surface covered with ink onto a sheet of paper. An impression can be copied onto individual sheets of paper or on one roll of paper. Another widely used method of commercial printing is digital printing. With digital printing, an image is copied from a computer onto paper. The third method is engraved printing. Engraving involves the use of a printing plate with the image raised above it.
The invention of these methods revolutionized commercial printing. Thanks to advancements in technology, reading materials can be copied much quicker today than they were 546 years ago. Also, thanks to these advancements, wording is no longer limited to matte paper sheets. Wording can now be placed on cardboard, glossy paper, and metal. With flexographic and screen printing, wording can also be pressed onto fabric, glass, and plastic. The text can be accompanied by images; and both can appear in high resolution colors. Commercial printing is a profession that will always be around. People will always have the need to share ideas through print.
